The Museum of Gdańsk (formerly: Historical Museum of the City of Gdańsk, City of Gdańsk History Museum) was first established in 1970 as a branch of the Pomeranian Museum in Gdańsk. On 2 April 1970, the Museum was located in the Main City Hall, today its main premises. The historic building, its history going back to the 14th century, used to be the seat of the city authorities.  Once installed on the premises, the Museum set off to build a collection documenting the history of the city from the Middle Ages to the contemporary times. The Museum’s collection groups about 39 thousand items.

The Museum of Gdańsk has 10 Branches, out of which:

5 Branches are open to visitors all year round, namely:

  • Main City Hall
  • Artus Court
  • Uphagen House
  • Museum of Amber
  • Museum of the Polish Post Office in Gdańsk

4 Branches are open in the summer tourist season, namely:

  • Wisłoujście Fortress (closed untill 2024) 
  • Guardhouse No. 1 at Westerplatte
  • Gdańsk Museum of Science (previously: Museum of Tower Clocks)
  • Hammer Forge at Oliwa 

Branch under construction:

  • Museum of Gdańsk (Central Department / under construction)
